Industrial Development and Evaluation of Cu-Promoted ZnO Adsorbents for H₂S Removal in Reforming Feed

In line with its efforts to expand technological collaborations with upstream industries in Iran, Iran Catalyst Company (ICC) has initiated a technical and engineering partnership with Sabalan Petrochemical Company. This collaboration focuses on the evaluation, selection, and development of testing methods for copper-promoted zinc oxide (Cu-ZnO) sulfur removal adsorbents, aiming to optimize H₂S removal from the gas feed of the petrochemical complex.

Considering the specific operational conditions of Sabalan’s processing units, Iran Catalyst provided a technical recommendation for the use of Cu-promoted adsorbents and designed a comprehensive industrial plan for testing and evaluating their performance. The plan was developed to increase the accuracy of technical decision-making and enhance confidence in selecting strategic consumables.

Within this project, a detailed analytical and interpretive report was delivered, including specialized test results, comparative performance analyses of the adsorbents, and process improvement recommendations. These evaluations serve as the technical basis for the company’s decisions on selecting and operating sulfur removal adsorbents in operational units.

The project was fully designed, executed, and implemented following a thorough assessment of Iran Catalyst’s technical, laboratory, and engineering capabilities, commissioned by the process engineering unit of Sabalan Petrochemical. The initiative aims to enhance adsorbent performance reliability and support decision-making based on actual operational data.

Joint Project Between Iran Catalyst and Sharif University of Technology Recognized as Top Innovation in the Steel Industry

The industrial project titled “Modification of Charge Profile and Formulation of Endothermic Gas Synthesis Catalysts”, developed collaboratively by Iran Catalyst Company (ICC) and the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at Sharif University of Technology, has been recognized by the Iran Iron & Steel Scientific Association as the Top Innovative Project in the Steel Industry in 2025.

This project was designed to localize the technical knowledge of one of the most complex catalysts used in heat treatment processes in the steel industry. The achievement represents a significant step toward self-sufficiency and advancement of domestic technological capabilities in Iran’s steel sector.

Dr. Ehsan Ebrahimi, CEO of Iran Catalyst, stated:

“Heat treatment catalysts are among the most complex industrial products in the country, which were previously supplied by foreign companies. Our expert team at Iran Catalyst, through extensive research and close collaboration with steel companies, has successfully localized this technical knowledge and achieved self-sufficiency for Iran in this field.”
